The shops around Restaurant Hoi Peng Seafood have changed hands many times.

However, Restaurant Hoi Peng remains steadfast amidst the competitive landscape of seafood restaurants.

Unassuming with a no-frill deco, it’s one of the best seafood restaurants in PJ serving delicious crab at the speediest services and unparalleled hospitality.

It may not have a menu as fancy as Fatty Crab or Green View Restaurant, which have etched their name as pioneer seafood restaurants in PJ. But the ambience is breezier, with a shorter wait time and food-wise on par too.

So if you’re looking to binge on fresh, flavour-packed crabs, a bountiful seafood variety and classic Chinese dishes without burning a hole in your wallet, swing by Restaurant Hoi Peng Seafood. Because we’re convinced you’ll never be disappointed!

Not many know that Restaurant Hoi Peng Seafood is actually a branch of the established stalwart seafood place called Hai Peng. Hai Peng is situated along Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur.

Unlike Hai Peng Crab House Restaurant, which flaunts decent real estate and spacious seating, the humble Hoi Peng occupies a single restaurant lot. As such, you’ll find tables spilling out onto its walkway.

5 years back, I could stroll in casually without a reservation and get a decent seat. But don’t try that now, as word has gone around about their food. So a reservation will ensure you have a comfortable table, and this helps reduce wait time.

Established more than 30 years ago, this Chinese Seafood restaurant is famous for serving delicious Indonesian crabs. They distinguish themselves from their competitors by not using local mud crabs.

These Indonesian crustaceans, in fact, have bigger claws and more meat. So even 1 kg among a group of small eaters is surprisingly enough!

Some say their pricing is a little steep. But rest assured that the crabs are fresh, succulent and tasty, and they never disappoint.

Ease of Parking

Flanked by a one way street, street parking is scarce and be prepared to park around the housing area during dinner and lunch time. The best strategy would be to drop off your guest in front of the restaurant, and pray you get lucky as you circle the block.

Ambiance

Housed within a typical Chinese seafood restaurant layout, there’s nothing fancy about Hoi Peng SS2’s ambience. Equipped with strong powered air-conditioning, ceiling fans and portable fans, you can ravel in good ventilation that won’t leave your clothes stale smelling.

Tables are placed close together, though, and some echo reverberates inside the restaurant during peak periods. It can get a bit noisy these times.

Service

The lady boss serves guest with a cheerful demeanor and is fluent in many languages. Unlike some unscrupulous restaurants that would recommend extremely large portions to make a quick buck, she will honestly tell you if you’ve ordered enough.

The staff waiters are mostly non-locals, but they are polite, well-dressed and quick to bring additional hammers, serviettes or gloves when summoned.

Food

Before you feast on their crabs, the waiter provides a hammer, gloves and a clear plastic bag, and advises dinners to pound the crab in the plastic bag to avoid any soiling your clothes.

Heralded as one of the best crab restaurants in PJ, their crabs are to-die-for and not to be missed.

Their sweet and sour crab is the most popular dish, featuring a runnier gravy with a tinge of chilli and spice. Best eaten with fried mantou, the fleshy claw yields a generous bite size of succulent, white meat, while the gravy is mouth-watering to the last drop!

The salty egg yolk with butter cream version is highly recommended, with a creamy texture and rich egg yolk nuances void of artificial replacements. Egg yolk paired with crab may sound like a cholesterol-inducing dish. But this sinful indulgence is worth giving in.

No crab dish is complete without mantou! This cute, bite sized fried buns and fragrant, not oily and pairs well with the sweet and sour crab gravy!

The black pepper crab doesn’t disappoint. Coated with caramelised onions and spring onions cooked over high heat, this dish tastes savoury and multi-dimensional!

Rich in smokey wok hei and neither is it heavily laden with oil, their fried glass noodles holds its texture & taste without feeling limp.

Besides crab, their fried glass noodle is another crowd puller. Packed with smoky wok hei, it’s not oil-slicked, holds the right texture and is bursting with flavours.

Skip their fried chicken wings because its tad too dry. This lemon chicken dish gets a nod approval from kids and adult for it crips skin, tangy lemon sauce and just the right fat that lend a succulent bite.

We also like the lemon chicken for its crisp skin and tangy sauce, as well as the braised tofu with vegetables that offers a medley of greens.

The lady boss recommended this soupy dish of braised vegetables with taufu, which balances the heavy flavours from the other dishes well.

Other bestselling dishes on its varied menu include fried salted egg squid, anchovy fried rice, and chilli clam dish.

Pricing

Price-wise, our order of 1kg of crabs came to RM200. The total bill for 6 dishes came up to RM320, which is acceptable as serving sizes are generous.

Conclusion

Whether you’re just back from Australia, Singapore or anywhere else, and you’re on a crab food trail pining for good seafood in PJ, Restaurant Hoi Peng is worth a try.

This seafood haven in SS2 knows the recipe to entice diners with heavenly food and good service.
