About Yehliu Geological Park, Taipei

Located in the Wanli district of Taiwan, Yehliu Geo Park measures 1,700 meters and sprawls into the sea.

 

From the top view, this cape looks like a giant turtle submerged into the ocean, earning the moniker “Yehliu Turtle”.

 

Yehliu’s intriguing landscape, comprising rocky land and the vast ocean, is unlike any other place in Taiwan.

 

As you explore the shoreline comprising sea holes, mushroom-shaped rocks, and rocks that taper to a slender width, the crashing waves add to this mesmerizing symphony of nature.

 

How To Get To Yehliu Geopark?

Located at the tip of northern Taiwan, getting to Yehliu by pubic transport is an adventure in itself.

 

Your best bet will be to take a combination of train and bus rides, as we found this manageable and cost-effective. We first boarded the train to the Taipei Station. At the Taipei MRT, we headed towards the Daan Park Station.

 

After that, we boarded the Keelung Bus 953 from Xinyi Market, which stops at the Yehliu Geopark stop.

 

The bus ride lasts approximately 1 hour, gently meandering through the local markets and shops while lulling us to a light sleep.


If you’re coming from Taipei City, there are several other options for you to get to Taiwan Yehliu via public transport, all originating from the Taipei Station. We’ve ranked these options based on speed and ease of transfer.

 

Having said that, travel time becomes more predictable and shorter via train vs. bus.

  • Take the THSR (or TRA) to Taipei Station, then transfer to the Taipei MRT to Tamsui Station. From here, board the Tamsui / Keelung Bus 862 to the Yehliu stop.

  • Take the THSR or TRA to Taipei Station and transfer to the Kuo-Kuang Bus 1815 to Yehliu stop.

  • Take the TRA to Keelung Station and transfer to Keelung Bus 790 to Yehliu stop. 

  • Take the THSR  or TRA to the Taipei Station, then transfer to Gongguan Station. Walk to National Taiwan University and board the Keelung Bus 1068 to Yehliu Geopark stop.

From the Yehliu bus stop, take a slow 800m walk, traversing pass the fisherman's wharf where fishing boats dock. You’ll also pass by an ancient Chinese temple on your right.

 

What To Do At Yehliu Geo Park

Yehliu Geo Park comprises 3 sections, which can be explored comfortably within 1 ½ hours.

The first section features various large rocks with interesting shapes and names, such as the Fairy’s Shoe, Queen’s Head, and Candle Rock.

 

The second section showcases 2 gigantic rocks named Dragon Head and Bean Curd.

We found the third section most interesting as we walked across the rocky coastline comprising sea-eroded caves and seal-shaped rocks. In fact, we were fascinated mostly by the crater-like grounds that look like the moon’s surface!

Apart from these, there is a tiny café serving hot drinks approximately 500 meters away from the rocky attractions.

 

Do take a moment to pause at the statue of Lin Tien Jane, who was a brave fisherman who lost his life while attempting to save a student who fell into the sea.

 

How much is the entrance fee to Yehliu Geopark Taipei?

The ticket price to enter Yehliu Geopark is very reasonably priced at RM17 / TWD120 / USD4.03 per person.


Dos and Don’ts at Yehliu Geopark

  • Respect Mother Nature. Do not chip any of the stone formations or take home any.

  • Certain areas are lightly barricaded with tape or rope. Do adhere to it and do not exceed the border for safety purposes.

  • Wearing good footwear like sneakers is important as the surfaces are uneven and slippery during the rainy season.

  • If you’re going during colder months, be sure to bring along a raincoat as it's bound to rain continuously.

  • Don’t bother using an umbrella at Yeliou, unless you want to re-enact the scene in Mary Poppins.

 

Other attractions Near Yehliu Geopark

Given the proximity and accessibility of Shifen, Jiufen, and the Golden Waterfall from Yehliu Geopark, it’s worth making these attractions part of your day’s itinerary.

 

Start by heading to Yehliu Geopark in the morning based on the suggested mode of transport above.

 

Once you’re done sightseeing, walk out to the main road and board bus 1815 towards Fujiantianxia Community at Keelung. From there, take a 16-minute walk towards Keelung train station and head towards Ruifang.

 

From Ruifang, hop on bus 1062 that takes you to the heart of Jiufen, where you will pass by the Golden Waterfall on the way towards Jiufen.

 

The Golden Waterfall closes at 4 pm, signaling the perfect time to leave and head to Shifen to enjoy the scenic nightlife.

 

Located 20.9km away from Jiufen, you can either hail an Uber, which will shorten your journey to approximately 42 minutes. Or commute via train for a 1 hour and 5 minutes ride.

 

Should you choose to take the train, you will have to ride back to Keelung, and from there on take the train to Pingxi. Given the numerous stops, hailing an Uber gets you straight to Shifen, making it less hassling and time-saving, and the best way to travel between Jiufen and Shifen.

 

Is it worth going to Yehliu Geological Park in Taiwan?

It’s a resounding YES, for its unique rock formations are as spectacular as its diverse landscape and amazing views. The crashing sounds of waves, constant drizzle, and strong wind is novelty worth experiencing.

 

It is nature's artistry on full display here, and soaking in the incredible sights and sounds makes it an unforgettable adventure.

 

We were awestruck by Yehliu’s sweeping beauty, so don’t be surprised to find yourself jostling for space amidst a sea of people, flanked by the mighty ocean below.
